Grocery Girls was founded quite by accident in 2018 by Melinda Calkins Bartling, local Realtor and Entrepreneur.
One of her real estate clients asked her if she knew someone that could get her groceries for her following a surgery. Melinda referred her to a stay at home mom that loved grocery shopping.
What Melinda soon discovered was the grocery shopping business was much like real estate. Everyone who uses Grocery Girls knows someone else that needs the service. So within a matter of weeks, Melinda had more clients by word of mouth than she had anticipated.
COVID-19 Sent Grocery Girls into Overdrive!
Grocery Girls had been serving most of the same clients since 2018 just by word of mouth without really being a business. Then in March 2020, with the outbreak of COVID-19 and with time on her hands, Melinda saw the opportunity to actually turn a service into a business and take it to the next level.
She quickly came up with a name, created a website and turned a word of mouth service into a full time grocery shopping and delivery business by getting mentioned on Nextdoor by one of their customers.
Grocery Girls has grown by leaps and bounds since Covid-19. Most of their customers have come from people who were frustrated with the other grocery delivery options – wrong products, lack of freshness with produce and huge markups in pricing (between the store and the service).
All of her Grocery Girls are stay at home moms and now have more time to shop since their husbands are mostly working from home.
We’re Never too Busy to Shop for You!
Melinda still sells real estate full time and oversees Grocery Girls and her other businesses on a daily basis but makes time to personally fit in a few early morning grocery orders every week because she loves grocery shopping – which is the first requirement of a Grocery Girl. She also has a wait list of people who want to be Grocery Girls so she knows they can always fulfill all the orders they receive.
“We’re never too busy to shop your order” is their mantra!
